A conference on waste and microplastics in the Arctic will be held on July 20 in Arkhangelsk as part of the main events of the Russian Chairmanship of the Arctic Council. The event will be held at the Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov.
More than a hundred experts, heads of relevant organizations and departments are expected to take part in the conference. Among them are Governor of the Arkhangelsk Region Alexander Tsybulsky, Special Representative of the President for International Cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic Artur Chilingarov and Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology Dmitry Tetenkin.
Sessions will be devoted to various aspects of environmental issues in the Arctic. So the topic of one of the discussions will be the waste reform in the Arctic. Its participants will discuss the implementation of the national project "Ecology", waste management in the Arctic region, as well as the elimination of accumulated environmental damage.
During the session “Russian State Environmental Policy in the Arctic and International Cooperation”, experts will discuss the best practices for managing municipal waste management and implementing the provisions of international environmental conventions and protocols.
The focus of the discussion on the conservation and development of marine and coastal ecosystems will be the management of plastic waste in the Arctic, the elimination of ocean pollution and other aspects of the spread of synthetic polymer particles.
