The press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources reported that on September 16, a large-scale cleanup will take place in the village of Turka. As part of the environmental campaign "Water of Russia" and the eco-festival "Horizon", volunteers plan to clean 10 km of the shoreline of Lake Baikal from garbage. Anyone can join the cleanup. Inventory will be available on site.
The organizers of the event intend to draw attention to the problem of overconsumption and show the scale of human waste in the unique ecosystem of Lake Baikal. The event will also include an environmental lecture on the flora and fauna of the lake, its problems and significance in the water balance of fresh water around the world. In addition, experts will talk about the problem of biological and anthropogenic pollution of Lake Baikal.
Baikal is the largest freshwater lake in Eurasia. Its depth is 1187 meters below sea level, and the shores are located at an altitude of 456-457 meters above sea level. Baikal contains almost a fifth of all fresh water in the world.
