The UK and Tunisia have signed a Charter to promote sustainable tourism in Hammamet, one of the most popular among British tourists Tunisian resorts on the Mediterranean coast.
The document was signed by the British Ambassador to Tunisia Louise de Sousa and the Minister of tourism of Tunisia René Trabelsi.
The purpose of the Charter is to create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly tourism infrastructure in Tunisia, which is a priority for British tourists in their choice of holiday destinations.
The signatories agreed, in particular, to stop the use of plastic drinking straws in hotels by December 2019, and by March 2020 - disposable plastic cups and cutlery. In addition, the Charter aims to ensure that hotels in Hammamet receive an international certificate of sustainable tourism by December 2020, create better opportunities for local artisans to sell their products to tourists and promote local gastronomy products in hotel restaurants.
According to the WWF, in the Mediterranean sea annually dumped about 600,000 tons of plastic. Cleaning measures annually cost Tunisian economy $20 million.
