In a circular issued recently, the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has warned operators against pooling seats for charter flights from ‘Covid hotspots’ to UAE.

Following the surge in Covid-19 cases from India, UAE banned passenger flights from the country in April. However, residents, diplomats, UAE long-term residence visa holders, and travellers arriving by business aircraft were allowed to enter the emirates. The GCAA defines business aircraft as “A civil aircraft operated for a purpose other than a scheduled commercial flight and configured with a total number of passenger seats that does not exceed 35.”

The GCAA said that companies caught indulging in such practices will not be allowed to operate in the UAE. Indians arriving on these business jets to the UAE are subject to the required public health protocol and are required to wear a monitoring and tracking device, which is also applicable for those arriving from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka

Travellers will also have to comply with a 10-day quarantine period and complete a PCR test upon arrival followed by two other PCR tests on the 4th day and 8th day of their quarantine period.

Despite these restrictions, Indians had been travelling to the emirates on these chartered flights. The demand for private jets had boomed ever since passenger flights were suspended from India to UAE as those who could afford it scrambled to escape.
