The press service of the Moscow Zoo announced the arrival at the institution of a pair of young binturongs - male Zephyr and female Fiona. Experts expect that in the future the animals will be able to produce offspring.
These predators belong to the civet family. Outwardly they resemble felines and bears. Typically, binturongs are dark gray or black in color. They have white whiskers and ear tufts.
It is the only predator in Eurasia that uses its tail for climbing. The biturongs hold the branches with it, like a fifth limb. The enclosure for new residents provides the opportunity to climb 6-7 meters up. From above they watch visitors, remaining hidden from prying eyes. This makes the animals feel safe.
Zephyr and Fiona have adjusted well to their new location and are now actively exploring the territory. They go out for a walk after 17:00. Biturogs are crepuscular animals. They become more active closer to night. At this time, there is a higher chance of hearing their sounds, sometimes reminiscent of laughter and sometimes a growl.
