Tropical Storm Phanfone is said to gradually strengthen moving westward toward the central Philippines thus posing a typhoon threat over the Christmas holiday, says weather.com.
As EcoTourism Expert came to know, Phanfone, also known as Ursula in the Philippines, is currently centered well east of the Philippines and is moving to the west-northwest. It is reported that it could come to the east-central Philippines by late Christmas Eve local time.
Impacts from Phanfone will then spread across the rest of the central Philippines through Christmas. Intensification is expected up until landfall since vertical wind shear is low and sea-surface temperatures are plenty warm.
According to forecasts, it will be either a strong tropical storm, or the equivalent of a category 1 hurricane at the time Phanfone reaches land in the region of the eastern islands. Destructive winds and storm floods are expected there. Torrential rains that accompany a hurricane can also cause floods and landslides in central Philippines.
Phanfone will be the second typhoon to hit the Philippines this month. In early December, typhoon Kammuri also struck here - the most powerful typhoon in the last three years, which hit the central part of the country.
