The New Year has brought new taxes to the Greek tourism sector. According to the government decree, now every tourist will pay additional fees not for accommodation, but to cover the consequences of weather disasters.
It will take more than 3 billion euros to compensate for the damage caused by fires and heavy rains that hit the country last year. The compensation of these expenses will be paid by the guests of Greece. Every tourist registered in hotels, private apartments and villas will be required to pay environmental fees before departure. The amount of tax will depend on the time of visiting the country and the comfort of housing.
In high season, every day of stay in a five-star hotel will cost a tourist an additional 10 euros. For accommodation in 4-star hotels, you will have to pay 7 euros per day, in 3-star hotels the tax will be 3 euros per day, and customers of 1-2-star hostels will be charged an additional 1.5 euros per night. For accommodation in rented apartments from March to October, the tax will be 1.5 euros/night. In the remaining months, the daily climate fee varies from 0.5 to 1.5 euros.
The funds received in this way will be directed to the state fund created to combat critical climate change.
