The Maldives is steadily rebuilding the inbound tourism sector. According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism, over six thousand guests arrived there last Saturday - a record number since the border opened.
The Maldives closed their borders on March 27, 2020, but the heavily dependent archipelago reopened on July 15, and the number of tourists has grown steadily since then. Since the beginning of August, the average daily number of travelers arriving in the country has exceeded four thousand.
While the flow of tourists visiting the Maldives is increasing day by day, the authorities are relaxing the measures imposed due to the pandemic. Now tourists can stay not only in private resorts, but also in local guest houses on the inhabited islands.
The Maldives received 1.7 million tourists in 2019, and in 2020 their number fell to 555 thousand due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The government hopes to welcome 1.5 million tourists this year. The goal can be achieved if the daily attendance exceeds 2500 people. Currently, the main markets for tourism in the Maldives are Russia and India.
