The Italian authorities expect that the country's tourist traffic in 2022 will be as high as in the pre-pandemic 2019, despite problems with air transportation, a rapid increase in inflation and the absence of Russian and Asian tourists.

According to Italian Tourism Minister Massimo Garavaglia, "it seems that by the end of the year we will reach the level of 2019, and in some localities and regions it will even be exceeded."

According to the Association of Italian merchants Confcommercio, in the period from June to September, foreign tourists will spend 17 billion euro on vacation in Italy, which corresponds to the level of 2019.

Nevertheless, a number of problems remain in the Italian tourism industry. While low-cost airlines such as Ryanair and WizzAir have increased the number of flights to Italy, traditional full-service airlines have reduced them by 8.1% compared to 2019.

In addition, the tourism industry remains among the sectors of the Italian economy most affected by the labor shortage: about 350,000 jobs remain vacant, which is mainly due to poor working conditions and low wages.
