Together with the aviation monitoring, there will be ground monitoring - the specialists of the reserve will study the territory on ATVs, the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia reported on its website.
“There are not many bears yet, as there is ice near the island. Last year, the situation was similar, then we counted about 100 individuals,” said Alexander Gruzdev, director of the Wrangel Island reserve.
The polar bear is one of the 13 priority species of the Ecology national project.
In March, the head of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Alexander Kozlov, approved a strategy for the conservation of the polar bear until 2030, which provides for the restriction of economic activity in the most significant areas for the predator. It is planned to involve the local population in the preservation of the predators in captivity, study and forecast the impact of climate change and anthropogenic factors on the polar bear, and study the impact of pollutants on animals.
An important direction of the strategy is the monitoring of polar bears, the ministry notes.
"For this, modern technical means and methods will be used, together with aviation, satellite and ground data," the head of the department, Alexander Kozlov, was quoted as saying.
The polar bear is the largest of the land predators, it is listed in the Red Book of Russia, in seven regional Red Books and is included in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
