Over the past 50 years, the decline in the biodiversity of our planet has reached 68%. According to the director of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Russia Dmitry Gorshkov, it is important to change this trend.

"In general, the trend towards a decrease in biological diversity in the coming years will continue, and one of the tasks now is to reverse this trend. There are a number of scenarios, a number of necessary measures," Dmitry Gorshkov said during a press conference at the TASS news agency on Thursday.

He noted that the role of non-profit organizations is extremely important in this work. "Non-profit organizations, including environmental ones, should draw the attention of ordinary citizens, authorities and businesses to these problems," said the director of WWF Russia.

According to him, the main driver of biodiversity reduction is food production. Other factors include deforestation, overfishing, and the unsustainable use of available resources.

Dmitry Gorshkov noted that one of the most effective methods of biodiversity conservation is territorial protection and preservation of ecosystems in their original form.

"In the current situation, it is necessary to be very competent in finding a balance between conservation and development. This is possible. The creation of various protected areas is not a ban at all, but a search for opportunities for the sustainable use of available resources," he said.

"The development of the Arctic, the development of the Northern Sea Route should and can go in this direction. The Northern Sea Route can become green. This is not only the work of the state, it is also work with companies," Dmitry Gorshkov added.

He said that many companies are making voluntary commitments to conserve biodiversity, reduce their impact and transform their operations. "Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Some companies try to hide environmental information," he said.
