The Russian Ministry of Natural Resources has prepared a draft report on the state and protection of the environment in 2021. The document is a set of analytical information on the state of the environment, changes in its state under the influence of natural and anthropogenic factors and measures to reduce negative impacts.
In accordance with it, in 2021 in Russia there were 11.9 thousand specially protected natural areas of federal, regional and local significance. Compared to the previous year, their total area increased by 2 million hectares and amounted to 242.1 million hectares. Thus, protected areas occupy 14.14% of the area of Russia.
Most protected natural areas are located in the Central Federal District. The smallest number of such territories was recorded in the North Caucasian Federal District.
