The construction of dustproof screens in Murmansk Commercial Sea Port has been completed. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia, 1,553 meters of screen structures with a height of 20 meters were installed. The total area of the installed panels was 27,443 sq.m.
According to the Director General of the Murmansk Commercial Sea Port Alexei Rykovanov, the screens allow "to reduce the wind speed by four times, and the efficiency of dust suppression is more than 80 percent».
Before the start of construction, the best world experience of using such technologies in the ports of Japan, Australia, China, Canada and other countries was studied. Subsequently, it was adapted to the conditions of the Arctic, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources. Within the framework of the project, the company Shanfeng (China) developed a mathematical simulation of the location of the dust protection screen in the Murmansk Commercial Sea Port, determined the optimal height of the structure, the value of the perforation of the screen.
To better fit the screens in the landscape, they developed a special design done by the Moscow Stroganov Art School. As a result, in addition to the coat of arms of the city of Murmansk, the screens “Gates to the Arctic”, “Murmansk - the city of the port”, “History of the Murmansk region - Petroglyphs” appeared on the screens.
According to the governor of the Murmansk Region Andrei Chibis, the issue of coal dust has worried local residents for many years. “Today, in addition to installing dust protection screens the company carries out a whole range of activities. At all stages of the port’s operation, various dust proof and cleaning technologies are used - both water guns and special “vacuum cleaners” are used, and an environmental control room is operating. It is important that the Murmansk Commercial Sea Port invests in the environmental safety of the North and sets a good example for colleagues,” he emphasized.
The work was carried out in accordance with the agreement on cooperation between the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia, Rosprirodnadzor and JSC Murmansk Commercial Sea Port.
