The press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources reported that for the first time in the last 10 years, chicks of a relict seagull were spotted in the Daursky Reserve. The Torey Lakes are the only place in Russia where this red–book bird prefers to hatch and raise offspring.
Over the past ten years, gulls have not nested in these places due to drought. With the onset of the humid climatic period, there is a revival of bird markets. The chicks were found on one of the islands of Lake Barun Torey. A colony of 40 birds brings up 33 chicks.
There are only six nesting sites of the relict gull in the world: four in China and one each in Kazakhstan and Russia. In total, there are now about 12 thousand individuals of this rare bird.
The largest number of seagulls in Russia was recorded in 1990. Then the number of birds was 1,215 pairs. By the end of the wet period, the colony's population was also decreasing. In 2007, there were only 130 adults and 103 chicks.
