In the Primorye Region, for the first time, a wild Far Eastern leopard was reliably recorded in the cluster area of the National Park "Land of the Leopard" near the Gamow Peninsula. This is one of the southernmost points of the historical range in Russia. The leopard was captured by a camera trap with prey at a local deer farm.
Scientists were able to identify the pioneer by the unique pattern of spots on the skin. He is now about 2 years old.
The Red Book Far Eastern leopards in Russia live only in the south-west of the Primorsky Region. These big cats are the most peaceful and never attack people.
Due to human influence in the 20th century, they were on the verge of extinction and disappeared from many parts of their original habitats, including the Gamow Peninsula.
The population was saved in the National Park "Land of the Leopard". The number has tripled, to 121 individuals, and leopards began to populate areas where they had not been seen for decades.
The territory of the Gamovsky cluster site, where a leopard was recorded, until recently was devastated annually by fires and poachers. After its inclusion in the national park in 2019, nature began to recover, and leopards began to settle in this direction.
In addition, a white-breasted bear and a tiger have recently been sighted in the Danlm area.
