The press service of the national park "Land of the Leopard" reported an accident with a water deer in the Primorsky Territory. A male of a new species for Russia was shot down on the Razdolnoye-Khasan highway near the village of Filippovka outside the boundaries of protected natural territories. According to scientists, this case indicates that a rare deer is actively settling in the region.

"The death of a deer on the road confirms the growth of livestock and the expansion of the range to the north," the report says.

Scientists took samples from the downed male for laboratory tests, which they will give to colleagues from China and the Republic of Korea. Genetic studies will show which of the two subspecies belongs to – Chinese or Korean deer.

The water deer lives mainly in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China and on the Korean Peninsula. Males of this species do not wear horns, but they have long canines.

For the first time, a "saber-toothed" beast was officially recorded in Russia in 2019 in the southern section of the Land of the Leopard National Park. It was this national park that became the core of the area of the Russian grouping of the species.

Over the past four years, the number of water deer has grown almost 2 times – up to 300 individuals.
