A number of new specially protected natural areas of federal significance will appear in Russia by 2024 as part of the Ecology national project. This was announced at a press conference in TASS by the director of the department of state policy and regulation in the field of protected areas development of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia Irina Makanova.

In particular, in 2023, the Big Tokko nature reserve, the Laptev Sea federal reserve and the Momsky national park will be created in Yakutia.

“The plans include the creation of national parks in the Murmansk region and in the Nizhny Novgorod region,” she said.

In addition, the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources has submitted project materials and a draft government decree on the Pompeevsky National Park in the Jewish Autonomous Region for consideration by the Cabinet of Ministers, Makanova said. Its creation will complete the formation of a network of specially protected natural areas necessary for the development of the Amur tiger range, she noted.

“We also have in our project the creation of the Tula Zasaki National Park in the Tula Region. This is a famous zasechnaya area, and we in the Tula region today do not have a specially protected natural area of federal significance. Such an offer was made to us, and we are working on it,” Makanova said.

She noted that the ministry has many plans to create new protected areas, and the main task in this work is to protect flora and fauna, natural ecosystems.

“But this is not the exclusive task of our protected areas. Lately, we have been paying a lot of attention to such areas as environmental education and upbringing and eco-tourism, where possible, where it will not damage the respective natural ecosystems,” said the head of the department.

According to her, the Ministry of Natural Resources hopes for the speedy adoption of the law on tourism in protected areas, the draft of which has already passed the first reading in the State Duma.

“This document will finally create normal, transparent, clear legal mechanisms for the implementation of such a direction as tourism in specially protected natural areas,” Makanova said.
