At the Eastern Economic Forum, the Corporation for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic, Rostourism and the government of the Sakhalin Region signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of tourism development and promotion of promising tourism projects of the Kuril Islands in the domestic and foreign markets.

According to Rostourism, the potential of the Kuriles is almost unlimited.

“These are waterfalls, and volcanoes, and lakes, and magnetic sands, lagoons of stunning beauty, and much more,” the department noted.

The Kuril Islands are a must-see place. We will make every effort to make them available to Russian travelers with different income levels, to create the necessary conditions,” said Zarina Doguzova, head of Rostourism, whose words are quoted in the message.

At the same time, she stressed that any development of the islands should take into account the careful attitude to the unique nature and ecology of the Kuriles.

In turn, the Governor of the Sakhalin Region Valery Limarenko spoke about the development of infrastructure on Iturup Island.

“The Kuriles are a unique land. Anyone who visits here will never forget our beautiful islands in their severity and generosity. Therefore, the number of tourists wishing to get to the Kuriles has recently increased significantly. To meet the demand, we have arranged 15 additional flights to Iturup Island. We are also preparing the infrastructure,” Limarenko is quoted by the Ministry of Natural Resources.

According to him, during the WEF, an agreement was signed providing for the construction of a 120-room hotel on Iturup.

Nikolai Zapryagaev, Director General of the Corporation for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic, noted that the Kuriles are unique islands that are desirable, but so far difficult for tourists. However, they may be attractive to investors who will ensure the tourist flow and development in the islands, he said.
