The governor of the Khabarovsk Territory Sergei Furgal ordered the creation of a new reserve on Lake Amut. The status of a special protected natural area (SPNA) will protect a unique corner of nature from illegal logging.
In September last year, Khabarovsk activists of the All-Russian Popular Front appealed to the head of the region, to Rosprirodnadzor (Russia’s Managing body) and the prosecutor's office with a request to prevent pollution of the Amut. According to the activists, under the guise of sanitary felling, clear-cutting of forests is carried out on an area of more than 100 hectares, which negatively affects the ecology of the lake.
The regional government created an interdepartmental commission in order to deal with the situation; the Amur Basin Environmental Prosecutor's Office conducted its audit.
“The problem began to be tense, and although the commission didn’t find any violations, I gave the Ministry of Natural Resources an order to create a reserve on Lake Amut so that the question of legality of felling was completely eliminated,” said Furgal.
“Amut is a pearl for us, the forest around must be preserved."
Landslide lake Amut is a natural monument of regional significance. It is located in the Khabarovsk Territory. The water in the lake is compared with the Baikal in transparency. Nowadays, special protected natural territories occupy about 8.5% of the territory of the region - about 6.7 million hectares.
