The palm moth is a new invasive insect pest for Russia, which was first discovered in Sochi in 2014. Its wingspan reaches up to 12 centimeters, the insect can cover a distance of 25 kilometers. Therefore, the spread of the pest is very high.

The palm moth populates all types of palm trees in the resort - none are resistant. The chief specialist of the plant protection department of the Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Biological Sciences Natalya Karpun told EcoTourism Expert that the experience of protecting palm trees shows that the sites where regularly sprayed and the palm trees retain their vitality and high decorativeness.

Experts believe that restoration of a palm tree is possible if it has damaged from one to three to five leaves. But if the central leaves in the outlet have died, the palm tree cannot be restored. It must be promptly removed and destroyed by burning or crushing the trunk. Even in a felled palm tree, the moths can be developing up to nine months.
