Employees of the reserve and volunteers are involved in counting the number of the Caucasian brown bear. The study is carried out on 22 sites throughout the entire Caucasus Reserve (Krasnodar Territory, the Republic of Adygea and the Karachay-Cherkess Republic). This was reported by the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia on its website.
“The annual count of the number of bears in the reserve falls on the end of May - the beginning of June. It is at this time that the rut begins in animals, and predators enter subalpine and alpine meadows, where it is easiest to visually count them in open space. According to past years, the population of bears in protected areas is in the range of 350-450 individuals,” the report says.
Bear registration is carried out by visual observation, including with the help of optics. In addition, animal trails are examined - each trace of the animal is recorded, its parameters are measured.
