In the park of culture and recreation "Green Island" in Cherkassk, Karachay-Cherkessia, the clearing of the Bolshoy and Maly ponds has been completed. The work took place within the framework of the national project "Ecology". This was announced by the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia on its website.
"The measures made it possible to restore the ponds' ability to self-clean and prevent their further depletion. Tidied reservoirs not only improve the appearance of the "Green Island", but also affect the ecosystem of the entire park. This is important not only for residents of the capital of the republic, but also for tourists," said Natalia Sologub, deputy head of Rosvodresurs, quoted by the Ministry of Natural Resources.
As noted in the department, the channels and ponds themselves were filled with sediments of meter thickness before clearing, the channels were almost completely covered with aquatic vegetation, the banks were hardly distinguishable due to thickets of reeds. Shoals appeared in the swampy floodplain, and the water, stagnating in a shallow channel, warmed up intensively and bloomed. The clearing was carried out in the most problematic areas of reservoirs, 66 thousand cubic meters of silt sediments were lifted from the bottom. Rosvodresursy allocated 74.8 million rubles for these events in 2023.
The restoration of reservoirs has become part of a comprehensive work on the improvement of the recreation area. The project "Small Pond in the Green Island Park" won the All-Russian competition for the best projects for creating a comfortable urban environment.
"With the help of a federal grant, as well as funds from the republican and municipal budgets, the Cherkessk administration plans to equip piers and a children's play trail, build a rope park, and create the necessary conditions for excursions on sapboards along the channels connecting the Small and Large Ponds," the message says.
