Cruise Tourism is all set to return to South Korea’s Jeju Island early next year. According to latest reports, the Jeju Tourism Organization (JTO) has won a joint bid with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to receive 32 tour cruises departing from Japan next year.
The first ship set to arrive at a port in Jeju is a giant Princess Cruise ship with 3,400 passengers on March 19. It will make 14 more trips to the island over the course of the year, it was shared. With that the JTO forecasts that the number of passengers coming to Jeju will reach 55,000.
Till last month, the number of visitors to South Korea’s southern resort island of Jeju, known locally as Jeju-do, topped 10 million this year, a strong indication of recovery from a slump caused by the 19 pandemic. This number is up 22.7 per cent from a year ago.
The latest attraction, Snoopy Garden (which opened in 2020) is a tribute to the famous comic strip by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz. Made famous by the South Korean boy band BTS member Jimin, who put up photos on his insta handle, the exhibits inside the park are actually fun and informative. Smattered with philosophical quotes by Snoopy, Charlie and Lucy, the exhibit breaks make for great photo opportunities and engaging play areas. For those who wish to carry back more than memories, the park shop has somefun curios to take back home.
For those who seek adventure and a little more action, should try go-karting at 9.81 Park Jeju. Three winding circuits on a gravitypowered kart offer a fun experience at up to 40kmh. This park alsoopened in 2020 and has been designed to give its visitors racingexperience akin to Formula One, complete with real time competition with other racers. You miss following the instructions and you stand disqualified. The icing on the cake is to have your race highlights edited into a jazzy video.
