The press service of the Kronotsky Reserve announced the approval of plans for scientific research on the territory of the Kronotsky and Koryaksky reserves, as well as in the South Kamchatka Reserve. Experts from leading Russian research institutes will participate in them. In their research, specialists will also use new techniques, including unmanned aerial vehicles with an infrared camera, sonar equipment, and video recording.
This year, the search for previously unknown endemic populations of char will continue to replenish the list of unique biodiversity sites in the territories of the Kronotsky Reserve and the South Kamchatka Reserve. Based on the data obtained, the analysis of the history of the development of the Kronotsky Lake basin and the reconstruction of evolutionary mechanisms will be carried out.
In addition, scientists will study populations of fish–eating birds of prey - the white-shouldered eagle and osprey. This work will last two years. During this time, experts plan to capture adult individuals to collect blood samples, parasites and measure physical characteristics, including biometric and morphological ones.
In 2024, long-term research on marine mammals will continue. Scientists will conduct surveys of real seals and sea otters on island and coastal rookeries, and gray whales will be counted in the Kronotsky Bay, benthos samples will be taken to study the state of the food supply.
