Internet portal KN51.ru reported on the continuation of environmental research on the Kola Peninsula. The participants of the Big Scientific Expedition will assess the possible impact of industrial enterprises on biodiversity in the vicinity of the village of Nikel and the city of Zapolyarny in the Pechenga District.
The expedition was initiated by Norilsk Nickel. Soil scientists, botanists, hydrobiologists and zoologists from the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences take part in it. This work was started in 2022. Then the experts made a preliminary assessment of the size of the zone of technogenic impact on biodiversity.
The report notes that the first year of research showed a decrease in the impact of the Kola MMC enterprises on ecosystems.
This year, the research started in Monchegorsk and continued in the Pechenga district. Scientists study soils, flora and fauna at different distances from the industrial sites of the Kola MMC.
Experts use various research methods. Thus, soil samples, soil traps, yellow plates, manual collection and an entomological net are used to study invertebrates. In turn, soil scientists take samples at different depths and analyze them: they reveal the presence or absence of mobile forms of heavy metals in different soil layers.
At the moment, the Large Scientific Expedition is working at six sites around the industrial sites in Nikel and Zapolyarny, at two sites in the Pasvik Nature Reserve and at one site near it. The collected data will be analyzed in the laboratory and will form the basis for assessing the environmental situation on the Kola Peninsula near the enterprises of the Norilsk Nickel group of companies.
