The Republic of San Marino, the oldest state in the world and the third smallest in Europe, which in this indicator is second only to the Vatican and Monaco, is nevertheless the least visited country of the Old World.
As EcoTourism Expert has learned, this year San Marino, which is not a member of the European Union and NATO, was visited by about two million tourists, which is only 0.2 percent of the 713 million travellers who visited different parts of Europe.
The area of San Marino is 61.2 thousand square kilometers, which are inhabited by only about 34,000 people.
This mountainous country is an enclave in Central Italy, founded in 301, has no outlet to the sea. Nevertheless, the historic center of its eponymous capital, perched on mount Titano, is included in the UNESCO world heritage list.
But San Marino is also about nature. Mount Titano, whose height reaches 739 meters, offers beautiful views of the landscapes of Northern Italy and the Adriatic sea.
The main sources of income of the state are banking, tourism and agricultural production. In San Marino, they mint Euro coins with their own symbols and issue postage stamps, which are in great demand among collectors.
