The government of the canadian province of Quebec has announced plans to create a nature reserve for biodiversity conservation on Anticosti Island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
28.4% of the island's territory is reserved for the new nature protection area.
The municipal authorities of the Anticosti Island will receive C$1.2 million from Quebec for the development of the reserve. Of this amount, $ 400,000 will be used to apply for the inclusion of the island in the UNESCO world heritage list.
"We want the natural heritage of Anticosti to be recognized, and we want it to be accessible. To do this, it is necessary to create the appropriate infrastructure," Quebec environment Minister Benoit Charette told reporters.
