A record number of tourists 4 million people - visited Qatar in 2023, and more than 2 million people spent their holidays in this Arab country in the first four months of this year. By 2030, the emirate plans to reach the figure of 6 million vacationers. This was stated by the head of the Qatar Tourism Authority, Saad bin Ali al-Harji. According to him, the tourism sector received a significant boost after the World Cup, which was held in Qatar in 2022. The following year, 4 million tourists visited the country, which was 39% higher than in 2022 with 2.56 million visitors. Sport is one of the main sources of attracting foreigners to the country. Doha will host the Arab Cup next year, and the Basketball World Cup in 2027. In addition to hosting various international sports competitions, economic forums, major car dealerships and one of the Formula 1 stages in the country, which brings significant revenues to the state treasury, the emirate is developing various tourist destinations, including cruise travel. "The Qatar Stopover program, organized by Qatar Tourism in collaboration with Qatar Airways, offers travelers a glimpse of our rich cultural heritage during a short stop during a cruise," he said. "Confirming our commitment to openness, the emirate has simplified the visa regime: now citizens of 102 countries can receive a visa on arrival." The cruise season 2023-2024 was an important milestone for a small state in the Persian Gulf: the emirate received 73 cruise ships that transported more than 378 thousand visitors. "This season has become one of the largest in the history of cruise travel," said the head of the Tourism Department, recalling that 54 cruise ships and 253,191 passengers stopped in the emirate in the 2022-2023 season." According to al-Harji, the expansion of the cruise ship terminal in the port of Doha will increase passenger traffic and accept more tourist ships. In addition, according to him, the project "Double the Discovery" is being developed jointly with Saudi Arabia. "This initiative is aimed at developing tourism in both Qatar and Saudi Arabia joint tour packages are offered to draw attention to the rich culture and attractions of both countries," he said. One notable trend, al-Harji said, is the growing demand for family travel, where inclusive and diverse vacation options are appreciated. "Qatar strategically positions itself as a family vacation destination, offering a wide range of entertainment for all ages," he explained. Qatar strives to use its strategic location, air links and visa-free regime to attract visitors from all over the world, while prioritizing the preservation of cultural heritage and natural landscapes. The goal is to increase the contribution of the tourism sector to Qatar's GDP to 12% by 2030.
