The rare animal was released into the wild in the mountains of North Ossetia a year ago as part of a program to revive the population, which is being implemented in the capital of the 2014 Olympics. The head of the republic, Sergei Menyailo, reported the crime.
- A little over a year ago, the Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of Russia, Alexander Kozlov, and I took part in a unique event: three individuals of a rare species of Central Asian leopard were released into the wild on the territory of our republic - a male Leo and two females - Khosta and Laura. Today, information came from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Republic that poachers shot Leo,” said Sergei Menyailo.
Law enforcement officials are already checking the information. If it is confirmed that poachers killed Leo, then they will face a criminal case and appropriate punishment. Central Asian leopards are now listed in the Red Book. This species, which once inhabited the Caucasus Mountains, has been completely exterminated by humans.
