Phnom Penh’s Techo Takhmao International Airport, 20 kilometres south of the city centre, is well on the way to be completed soon. Designed by Britain’s Foster + Partners, the terminal building will be the centrepiece of a new airport city.
The terminal building is being designed to resemble a tropical tree canopy and will comprise a central area for passenger processing and retail functions, bookended on either side by two curving aerofoil-shaped wings for departures and arrivals.
The airport is expected to be fully operational by 2025 when a new highway will connect it to the southern part of Hun Sen boulevard in Phnom Penh. The first construction phase is set to handle 13 million passengers a year, whilst the second phase is set to increase this to 30 million, rising to 50 million passengers a year in the final stage.
The old airport in Phnom Penh will be used as an airbase for domestic flights, private jets and foreign leaders.
