In the Murmansk region, petroglyphs found on Kamenny Island in Kanozero will be more actively promoted as a tourist attraction. This was reported in the regional ministry of information policy.

According to Andrey Chibis, Governor of the Murmansk Region, there are similar facilities on the Rybachy Peninsula and the Ponoi River. "Now the researchers have already found more than 1,500 drawings, which are on average about 6 thousand years old. It is very important to preserve this heritage, evidence of the people who inhabited our region thousands of years ago," he added.

According to the head of the region, this topic should be promoted in schools, so that the inhabitants of the Murmansk region know about the petroglyphs.

According to the Interfax-tourism agency, the petroglyphs of Kanozero date back to the 4th-2nd millennium BC and are among the five largest Neolithic monuments in the world. Rock paintings in the Terek region were accidentally discovered in 1997. Ten years later, the rock art museum "Petroglyphs of Kanozero" was established.

Scientists still continue to discover new rock paintings and find the images applied on top of older stories.

In 2020, the petroglyphs of Kanozero received the status of an object of cultural heritage of federal significance.
