On the territory of the only reserve in the Kemerovo region "Kuznetsk Alatau" the project of the Russian Geographical Society "Reserved Affairs" was launched. The expedition is held from 10 to 25 July.
“Among the planned activities, three main ones stand out: accounting for the population of the forest reindeer, monitoring of small forms of glaciers of the Kuznetsk Alatau and the so-called media volunteering – updating the photobank of the natural areas of the reserve,” the reserve said on its website.
The forest reindeer population census in the Kuznetsk Alatau is carried out annually. This unique animal is listed in the Red Book of Russia, and the mountains of the Kuznetsk Alatau are one of the few places where it lives. As noted in the reserve, the forest reindeer lives in these places largely due to the presence of small forms of glaciers in the mountains.
“Kuznetsk Alatau is the only place in the northern hemisphere of the planet where glaciers are located at such record low altitudes - from 1200-1300 m above sea level. The study of these unique objects began in the 60s of the last century with the expedition of the famous Soviet glaciologist (glaciology is the science of natural ice) Petr Stepanovich Shpin and continues to this day,” the reserve said.
