The scientific and educational expedition "Arctic Floating University - 2022: the Changing Arctic" was held on the research vessel "Professor Molchanov" from June 24 to July 11 in the high-latitude Arctic. In total, 55 people from scientific and educational institutions as well as organizations took part in it.
The ship passed along the route Arkhangelsk - oceanographic section "Cape Zhelaniya - Salm - Russian Harbor - Ice Harbor - Murmanets Bay - Cape Zhelaniya - Bolshoi Oransky Islands - Ivanov Bay - Varnek settlement (Vaigach Island) - oceanographic section "Pechora Sea" - Arkhangelsk.
The press service of Roscongress reported that all the tasks set for the expedition this year have been achieved.
In particular, scientific work was carried out in remote areas of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. Scientists managed to obtain valuable data on biodiversity, ecology, climate and historical and cultural heritage of the region.
The expedition members also analyzed, counted and classified marine debris by types of polymer products, as well as other types of materials. During the voyage, the students tested a special robot designed for automated accounting and collection of garbage that accumulates on the coast.
In addition, the researchers searched for new antibiotics and a variety of enzymes. In particular, it was possible to obtain a representative sample of «colored» snow in Ivanov Bay. Accurate identification of algae will be carried out in the laboratory of the Department of Microbiology and Virology of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia.
The program of the expedition was based on the implementation of the UNESCO concept "Learning through research". While the preparation, students were listening to lectures by leading scientists, and also participated in master classes, seminars and practical exercises on board of the ship.
