Tishka and Toshka from the shelter for orphaned bear cubs of the Altai Nature Reserve were released into the wild after four months of rehabilitation. Both cubs were previously rescued by shelter specialists - one bear cub arrived at the reserve from the Altai Territory, and the other had to be removed from a tree in May, where it had been sitting for two days in the area of one of the camp sites near the village of Artybash (Altai Republic). The Roszapovedtsentr of the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources reported this on its website.
“Over the summer months, the cubs grew stronger, gained weight (according to rough estimates at the time of release, their weight was about 40 kg), and they began to exhibit behavioral reactions that will help the animals to exist independently in the wild. And most importantly, the cubs still have a fear of humans, which gives them hope for their continued survival,” the report notes.
The main goal of rehabilitation is to raise wild animals, not pets. It is carried out according to the methodology of the Pazhetnov Center for Rescue of Orphaned Bear Cubs (Tver Region), which has serious experience in such work and unquestionable authority, said the Roszapovedtsentr.
“Preparation for release is not a simple undertaking and includes not only the administration of sedatives, a detailed examination, vaccination, installation of ear tags, but also the actual transportation. The animals made it through the journey normally, and transportation was carried out under the constant supervision of a veterinarian,” the message says.
After a short pause, the cubs began to climb the slope, leaving for the forest.
It will be possible to monitor their future fate with the help of photo recorders, a network of which has been installed along the protected shore. Also, state inspectors will not leave them unattended.
Rehabilitation of orphaned bear cubs has been carried out by the reserve for the second year.
