The press service of the Russian government announced the approval of the resolution on the creation of the Vottovaara national park in Karelia. The protected area will include three separately located natural clusters.

The national park will include the Akhvi, Varguno, and Piro mountains; Lake Pisan and Mount Vottovaara. The total area of these territories, located in the Muezersky and Medvezhyegorsk municipalities, is more than 14 thousand hectares.

It is expected that the new status of these territories will allow preserving tundra and forest-tundra landscapes that are atypical for these places. This will also open up new opportunities for studying Lake Pisanets, unique in its hydrometric parameters, which was formed in a deep tectonic fault.
