Eurowings Discover, a new subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group, recently launched its inaugural flight to Zanzibar, which marks the revival of tourism badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
"We are happy to welcome Eurowings discovery flight,” Zanzibar Minister for Tourism and Heritage Lulu Mohamed Mussa was quoted by the local media.
“We hope it will bring in more tourists at this time when the economy is recovering, as well as know it mostly depends on tourism."
She said Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania were safe places for tourists and that the government is encouraging health workers, staff at the official entry points and tourism players to have the Covid-19 vaccine.
The Eurowings flight general manager for southern Africa and East Africa, Andre Schulz said they will have two flights a week to Zanzibar Mombasa in Kenya.
"Plans are underway also to include Kilimanjaro and other destinations in Africa such as Mauritius," he said.
Tourism contributes more than 25% to Zanzibar’s GDP and also employs more than 60, 000 people.
