In the Volgograd region, the ecological rehabilitation of Lake Two Brothers has begun under the federal project "Improvement of the Volga", the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia reports on its website.
“Rosvodresursy sent 16.9 million rubles to the region to carry out work in 2022. One of the tasks of the national project "Ecology" in the Volgograd region is to stop the degradation of the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain by restoring the water balance of the unique natural area.
As Natalia Sologub, deputy head of the Federal Water Resources Agency, noted, the ecological rehabilitation of the lake requires comprehensive work. “It is necessary not only to rid the reservoir of silt and excess vegetation accumulated over decades, but also to take care of the tributaries that feed it. The lake should not dry up after the recession of water during the flood, for this, in parallel, the repair of hydraulic structures capable of retaining water is underway, ”the Ministry of Natural Resources cites her words.
The lake will be restored in two stages. First, the channels will get rid of sediments and bottom sediments, clear of excess plants and debris, reed thickets will be removed from the lake, and sand and silt deposits at the bottom will be replaced with clay soil. It also provides for the repair of concrete structures, gates on one of the channels. After that, the reservoir will be populated with living organisms, and trees, shrubs and perennial grasses will be planted on the banks, the ministry said.
In general, the Federal Water Resources Agency allocated 225 million rubles to the Volgograd Region in 2022 for the eco-rehabilitation of water bodies of the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain.
“In addition to Lake Two Brothers, it is necessary to restore the eriks Shulyashka, Kletsky, Camel (Zatonsky), Rotten, Korshevisty, Dry Kashirin, Pike, Morozovka, Kochkovaty and Penev, lakes Mitten, Sandy, Samsonovskoye, Vshivoe. Eco-rehabilitation of erik Sukhodol, Peschanka and Kunak lakes is nearing completion. Eight more projects are currently under development,” the Ministry of Natural Resources said in a statement.
The uniqueness of the floodplain lies in the fact that there are wetlands and key bird areas of international importance.
