The administration of the reserve reported that from July 19 it was forced to suspend research and excursion activities in the territories of the Kronotsky and Koryaksky reserves, as well as the South Kamchatka reserve. This decision was made in connection with the imprisonment of key employees of the organization in the pre-trial detention center.

On July 15, the court found guilty of embezzling a large amount of budgetary funds the head of the scientific department of the reserve Daria Panicheva, the deputy director for science and ecological tourism Roman Korchigin and the deputy director for financial and legal support Oksana Terekhova. All of them received real terms and were taken into custody in the courtroom. In protest, the director of the reserve, Pyotr Shpilyonok, filed a letter of resignation. In addition, other employees of the institution also wrote massive applications for resignation.

The director of the institution, Piotr Shpilyonok, emphasized that in the current conditions, the provision of high-quality excursion services is impossible.

“Unique on a global scale and vulnerable ecosystems of Kamchatka, which we show to tourists and study together with colleagues from other scientific institutions, require constant monitoring and careful calculation of any tourist activity. We also cannot do this full scale now,” he said.

Now the reserve is looking for ways to restore work in the affected areas.
