Kerala has seen a steady increase in the flow of visitors over the past few years. Though the tourism sector of the State was affected by devastating floods in 2018, it recovered fully by January 2019.
In fact, with about 41 thousand visitors arriving in the first quarter of this year, as compared to 38 thousand during the same period last year, tourism has recorded 8.07 per cent increase.
In 2018 itself, 16.7 million tourists arrived in the State – a 6 per cent increase compared to 2017, generating revenue of over Rs 3,6 bn, a considerable hike from Rs 2,8 bn of the previous year. In 2017, the total footfall was 15.67 million, which itself was an increase of 5.93 per cent from the previous year. Out of this, 1.09 million were foreign tourists, whose contribution to the state treasury touched Rs 8,7 bn.
Today, Kerala Tourism Department is targeting a 10 to 12 per cent increase in footfall and a corresponding growth in revenue by March 2020. It hopes to achieve this by conducting several promotion campaigns through partnership meets across ten cities.
Besides this, holding events like the Champions Boat League, and opening up new destinations and fresh experiences unique to the state are initiatives that will make Kerala a round-the-year destination for leisure travel, and allure more travellers to God’s Own Country.
