Kenya has been elected to chair the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Committee on Tourism and Competitiveness, cementing its global tourism leadership.
Kenya beat Thailand and Malta in two rounds of voting.
Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua said in a statement that the triumph put Kenya in a position to make global tourism decisions.
"This vote demonstrates the confidence that UNWTO member states have in Kenya’s leadership and ability to steer the organisation’s agenda on tourism competitiveness,” he said.
Mutua said that presiding over the committee will facilitate collaboration with other UNWTO members in the formulation of policies, formation of alliances, and promotion of tourism best practices.
"We shall champion initiatives that will help in the creation of jobs, protecting the planet, as well as driving inclusive growth that can be felt and be impactful within communities," he said.
