The trees will be recycled and returned to nature as fertilizer, soil compost, path material in natural areas and in animal enclosures.

In 2023, as part of the campaign for the collection and processing of coniferous trees "Christmas Tree Cycle", about 600 collection points for New Year's trees will be organized in Moscow. Including, 9 points will be opened in natural areas and eco-centers of the capital, Mospriroda reported on its website.

“Everyone can properly dispose of a Christmas tree. The promotion will begin in 2023 on January 2 and will last until February 26. New Year trees that will be handed over to collection points will be ground into chips and will fall back into nature as fertilizer, compost for the soil, material for filling paths in natural areas and in animal enclosures.

Acceptance of trees for recycling from the townspeople is free of charge. A prerequisite is the absence of tinsel, garlands, decorations and packaging on the trees.

“Not only New Year trees purchased at the Christmas Tree Bazaars are accepted, but also trees in tubs, sprigs of needles,” Mospriroda noted.
The Christmas tree cycle environmental action, which the Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection of Moscow has been holding since 2016, has become very popular in a few years. The main task is to help properly dispose of Christmas trees. In addition, the event is designed to draw attention to the separate waste collection program that has been implemented in the capital since 2020.

Residents joined the campaign with great desire and every year they bring more and more trees to the points. Since 2016, more than 180,000 Christmas trees have already been handed over for processing.
