El Al Airlines, an Israeli airline, decided to terminate its direct flights to Johannesburg a few hours before the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) ruling on South Africa's charge that Israel perpetrated genocide against Palestinians.
The airline attributed flight cancellations to a decrease in demand.
“Due to the current security situation, there has been a significant decrease in demand among Israeli travellers to various destinations, including Johannesburg in South Africa,” it said in a statement.
“In light of this, starting at the end of March 2024, we will suspend the activity on the Johannesburg-Tel Aviv line to adapt the target range to demands.”
El Al operates two weekly flights to and from Johannesburg.
The ICJ determined last week that Israel is obligated to prevent genocide against Palestinians by taking reasonable measures.
It was also mandated that Israel permit humanitarian assistance to enter the Palestinian area.
