The European Commission has chosen the French Grenoble as the "green" capital of Europe 2022 out of 18 candidate cities for the annual European Green Capital Award.
The status of the "green" capital of Europe can be obtained by any city of the EU member states, as well as candidate states for membership and associated with the EU Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.
Applicants are evaluated according to 12 criteria, including air quality, noise level, sustainable water supply, waste disposal, eco-investments, sustainable urban transport.
The winning city receives financial support from the European Union in the amount of 350.000.The first award of the European Commission as an environmentally responsible city in Europe with a population of at least 100.000 people was awarded in 2010 to Stockholm.
