Chinese youth are absolutely fascinated by Greece: more and more travelers from China, especially under the age of 30, want to get to know its unique landscapes and romantic culture, said the press secretary of the Beijing travel agency and Qunar portal, Wang Wenwen.
"So far this year, the number of travellers bound for Greece has risen by 8.3 per cent compared with the previous year, and it is up 66 per cent compared with 2016," Wang was quoted as saying.
"In the past five years, 36 per cent of the tour packages to Greece on our platform were purchased by travellers under 30."
She believes that one of the driving factors behind this tourist boom has been an increase in the number of non-stop flights between China and Greece: now it only takes 10 hours to get from Beijing to Athens.
Moreover, according to her, the most popular are the island of Santorini, the Aegean Sea and the Acropolis due to the atmosphere of European romance and historical architecture.
Zou Yu, director of European tourism at Trip.com Group, a travel services portal in Shanghai, agrees with the estimates. According to him, Chinese citizens born in the 1980s and 1990s booked most of their travel packages to Greece in 2019 - 22% and 21% of the total number of reservations, respectively.
