Sweden's Gothenburg and Spain's Malaga won the European capital of Smart Tourism 2020 competition.
A total of 35 cities from 17 member States of the European Union applied to participate in the competition organized by the European Commission.
The European Capital of Smart Tourism initiative recognises outstanding achievements by European cities as tourism destinations in four categories: sustainability, accessibility, digitalisation as well as cultural heritage and creativity.
Tourism is the EU’s third largest socio-economic activity, representing around 10% of the EU’s GDP, a press officer of the Commission told EcoTourism Expert.
