During the meeting of the Public Council under the Ministry of Natural Resources, the results of the field season of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute were summed up. The director of the institution, Alexander Makarov, said that according to the latest meteorological studies, at 10 out of 14 stations in Antarctica, there is a trend of increasing temperatures up to 4 degrees, or slightly decreasing.
“100% there is no doubt that global warming is observed even in Antarctica,” the press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources quotes Makarov.
According to him, research in the Antarctic is catastrophically important, since the climatic processes taking place there are of a global nature.
Among the significant projects is the study of ice over Lake Vostok. During one of the last expeditions, scientists managed to get ice 500 thousand years old. His study will allow reconstructing the atmospheric composition, temperature regime that were on Earth at that time.
In addition, work continues on the assembly of the unique Vostok station in Antarctica. The new complex is designed to work in extreme conditions. Commissioning of the station is scheduled for 2025.
The head of the Ministry of Natural Resources also said that a scientific vessel would be built by the end of 2028 for the development of science and for work in the Arctic zone. He will be named after Ivan Frolov, a Russian polar explorer and scientist, scientific director of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute.
