The press service of the World Wildlife Fund said that more than 25 specialists working on the conservation of the sea otter met to exchange information and experience.
“The experts discussed the results of research and the current state of sea otter populations in the Russian part of the range, as well as the problems that specialists have to face,” the report says.
Members of the expert group noted a decline in numbers in all habitats of the sea otter except for the Lesser Kuril Ridge. According to the records of the Kuril Reserve, in recent years, the number has increased here. In other habitats, these animals are becoming significantly smaller.
The task of specialists is to understand what exactly affects the decline in numbers and what needs to be done to save the species.
The press service of the foundation said that the sea otter could be threatened not only by human activity, but also by global climate change, as well as attacks by killer whales. The number of the species is also affected by industrial pollution, uncontrolled tourism and isolated cases of poaching.
The second meeting of the expert group is planned to be held at the end of March.
