Italian environmentalists have warned that the state of the natural attractions of the Scala dei Turchi in Sicily has deteriorated significantly. As EcoTourism Expert became aware, the Mareamiko association of ecologists said that the reason was “bad weather conditions that raged in Sicily a week ago.”

According to Claudio Lombardo, representative of the association, “The Scala dei Turchi is gradually degrading: the natural steps of the majestic cliff of Realmonte risk disappearing”.

Environmentalists clarify that the reason for the collapse also lies in the fact that excessive building around the rock changed the flow of rainwater, and a large number of tourists have an extremely negative effect on the natural monument.

Lombardo expressed concern that the rock is in a very poor state, its eastern side has already fallen apart. However, this attraction was reopened to visitors. Tourists should know that this is an extremely dangerous place now, he added.

The association claims that the weather has particularly affected the western side, facing Lido Rossello. The association believes that the access to tourists on the rock should be closed.

According to the environmentalists, the number of visitors should be limited by introducing a fee, as the authorities of Sardinia do. The visits to many popular beaches will be limited and tourists will need tickets to access them.

Scala dei Turchi is a is a rocky cliff on the coast of Realmonte near Porto Empedocle in the province of Agrigento. An outstanding cliff became popular due to its mention in Andrea Camilleri's series of detective stories about Commissario Montalbano.

From Italian, the name of the cliff can be translated as the "Turkish staircase". The rock consists of soft white limestone. Under the influence of wind and water, smoothed steps and terraces were formed on its surface.
