The Ministry of Resorts and Tourism of the Republic of Crimea initiated the development of regional environmental certification of hotel services. The project is being developed with the aim of forming a market for environmental services, including in the hotel sector, as well as the possibility of providing state support to eco-hotels.

Among the criteria are the use of modern environmentally friendly technologies and materials in the design, reconstruction and construction process, saving resources, including water resources, purchasing environmentally friendly raw materials, seasonal local products, reducing the amount of production and consumption waste, separate waste collection.

At the moment in Russia there are several systems of environmental certification "Green Key", "Leaf of Life", "Sign of Environmental Responsibility" and others. Such systems are voluntary.

Meanwhile, as noted by the Minister of Resorts and Tourism of the Republic of Crimea, Vadim Volchenko, at the moment there is no single approach to eco-classification and clear criteria for its assessment. In his opinion, Crimea "has every opportunity to develop and implement a system of criteria and preferences for accommodation facilities in order to become one of the first environmentally friendly regions of the Russian Federation, a leader in the development of ecotourism."
