On August 2, the Bering Strait International Festival started in Anadyr. As part of the business program of the Arctic Travel Forum, specialists and experts from the tourism industry from the Arctic regions of Russia met. At the session “Tourism in the Arctic: Advanced Development”, Governor of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug Roman Kopin said that the Arctic is traditionally interesting for its nature, ethnicity, and way of life, and these requests are growing, according to the portal of state bodies of the region.
This year, Chukotka may return to pre-pandemic levels of tourist flow in the region, so the development of this direction is very important for the district, the report says.
“Tourism is interesting for Chukotka. Here we have a lot to learn. We know that our neighbors in the Arctic regions are moving more actively in this direction, and their experience is very important to us. We are taking steps to improve this area. We are working on transport accessibility, we are attracting federal carriers,” the governor is quoted as saying in a message on the state portal of Chukotka.
According to him, the region supports local entrepreneurs, thanks to which weekend tours appeared in Chukotka - these are boat trips along the Anadyr Estuary and sea trips to Egvekinot.
In addition, domestic flight programs are expanding.
“The issue of infrastructure development remains difficult, here we help businesses build. This year, a hotel will appear in the village of Coal Mines, we support the construction of ethnoparks in the vicinity of Anadyr and Egvekinot, as well as glamping at Lorinskiye Hot Springs,” Kopin said.
During the plenary session, Russian experts spoke about the steps taken to develop the tourism and hospitality industry in the Arctic zone and the Far East of the country, shared their views on scenarios for the development of territories.
The Bering Strait International Festival is taking place in Chukotka on August 2-7 as part of the main events plan of the Russian Chairmanship of the Arctic Council in 2021-2023.
